In speaking with Politico, PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi suggested football should look to leverage its popularity more to drive interest, revenue and investment, partly inspired by Formula 1’s success with the Netflix documentary Drive to Survive.

Al-Khelaifi explained: “We have the best and the biggest and most popular sport in the world and we need to think outside the box [but] we should also be careful what we’re changing in football because we need to respect our fans.” As an example, he suggests that the European game could use it’s most high profile games to create a multi-day “holiday destination that people would love to go to.”

Having inherited the chair of the European clubs association after the ‘Super League’ debacle last year, a competition the PSG man said he would “never” join, he explained: “I’m really confident that no one will allow the Super League to happen. We need to think about everyone, not just ourselves. The Super League was just about themselves.”
