L’Équipe report that PSG’s €37m deal with Schalke for versatile German central defender Thilo Kehrer will have done little to improve already rocky relations with Spanish giants FC Barcelona.

The Catalan club had been following the player for months and intended to make a formal proposal at the beginning of this week. The 21-year-old’s agent, Roger Wittmann, was aware of Barcelona’s interest, but convinced the youngster to move to PSG anyway.

Wittmann, who is also the agent of Julian Draxler, has a good relationship with the PSG board.

Les Parisiens had made an enquiry for AS Monaco’s Almamy Touré, in case a deal for Kehrer fell through, according to the newspaper.

The €37m fee seems surprising for a player who only had one year left on his current Schalke contract, but is explained by several factors: PSG are now seen as a European giant famed for spending money, the market for central defenders has inflated massively in the last 12 months, with sources pointing to the €65m spent on Aymeric Laporte by Manchester City as an example.

Tuchel wanted a player who could play across the back three and is confident that Kehrer is the solution.
