Steven Universe picked up the award for Outstanding Kids and Family Programming at the 30th Annual GLAAD Media Awards.

The show was amongst the first round of winners announced, with the list also including HBO’s Believer for Outstanding Documentary; TBS’ Someplace for Outstanding Individual Episode (in a series without a regular LGBTQ character); Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls Online: Summerset for Outstanding Video Game; and DC Comics’ Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles; written by Mark Russell for Outstanding Comic Book.

“Though [Steven Universe] has always been significant for its LGBTQ representation, this past season was particularly memorable as it featured the first same-sex marriage on a mainstream children’s TV show,” reads GLAAD’s blog post on the event.

The specific episode referred to is the double-length special ‘Reunited’ that aired in July 2018, that saw Ruby and Sapphire tie the knot.

Steven Universe creator, Rebecca Sugar, posted a picture of the award on Instagram, saying, “Steven Universe won a GLAAD award tonight… this is unbelievable… the first animated show in history to win this award… I am so thankful and honored.”
