LOUISVILLE, Ky. – One of the most popular features of the annual NFCA Convention program is the diverse array of speakers that cover topics from both inside and outside the world of softball. Headlining this year’s event, Dec. 7-10 at the New Orleans Marriott, is keynote speaker Brett Ledbetter (Wed., Dec. 7th at 4:30 p.m).

An author and motivational speaker, Brett Ledbetter has inspired readers and audiences with his “What Drives Winning” philosophy and the ”What Drives Winning Conference” that he co-founded, featuring national champion coaches talking about the components that led to their success.

Ledbetter’s What Drives Winning

He specializes in building team cohesion and character development among high-performing individuals and groups and has worked with an all-star group of people in the sports industry. Ledbetter facilitates monthly head coach meetings at the University of Florida, Georgia, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, where the discussions uncover insight into the ways they can develop strong character in themselves and their student-athletes — both with longtime and more current issues in sports.

His talk at the NFCA National Convention will be about how to get results and be about the right things in achieving those goals. Winning coaches may go about things differently, but always have an ability to acquire talent, an ability to manage people and an ability to execute strategy.

He’ll lead a conversation on how successful coaches are able to manage people and shape the outside (behavior), while developing the inside (character). Below are answers to questions about his message to the NFCA and why he chose this topic.

What peaked your interest in delivering your message “What Drives Winning” at the 2016 NFCA Convention?

One of my favorite things to do is be in a room full of coaches discussing concepts on how to improve the sporting experience for everyone involved.

What do you hope attendees can take from your message and bring back to their peers and student-athletes?

My goal with any discussion that I lead is to learn and to stimulate thought.

What sparked your interest in this topic?

What has always amazed me is what separates coaches. It seems to me that the key differentiator is what they seek. The best coaches that I’m around seem to coach a different game. Once I started to understand that, it stimulated my curiosity and put me on a different pathway that I didn’t even know existed.

Ledbetter has been featured in two TED talks, one titled “What Drives Winning” and another dubbed “Building Your Inner Coach” and has worked with 30-plus Top 25 Division I teams and 30-plus Division I All-Americans.

In June, his second annual “What Drives Winning Conference” once again featured NFCA Hall of Famer Sue Enquist and an elite group of coaches and champions of sport who shared their experiences and perspectives on developing the moral and performance skills that create better people, better players and ultimately better results on the playing field. As a sign of the positive message being shared there, the speakers all donated their time (estimated at $500,000 collectively) just to spread their knowledge.

High achievers focus less on the results and more on the process, while recognizing that character is what drives the process, which in turn drives the results.
