LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Hawai’i Hilo senior Colleen Aubrey and for the third time this season, Valdosta State junior Caitlyn Calhoun, were selected as this week’s Louisville/Slugger NFCA Division II National Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for games played over March 23-29.

 

Aubrey, a native of Sunnyvale, Calif., was a consistent threat at the plate for the Vulcans over an 11-game span last week. The senior outfielder batted .528 (19-26) with seven doubles, 10 RBI, 15 runs scored. She recorded a hit in nine-of-11 contests, including seven multiple-hit games. In addition, Aubrey drew eight walks and posted a .794 on base percentage in helping her team post a 9-2 mark last week.

“I am honored to receive this award this week and especially this year,” said Aubrey. “I have learned how to play for my teammates, and we continue to push each other and to me that is the best experience a player can have. I also want to thank my coaches, because without them this wouldn’t have been possible. We are going to continue our hard work and win some more games.”

Selected to the Tournament of Champions All-Tournament team, Aubrey hit .480 to help the Vulcans to a 6-1 mark and a Bronze bracket title. She was 4-for-5 with a double, RBI and three runs scored versus Holy Names and went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored against Cal State East Bay.

“Colleen has been tremendous all year for us,” head coach PeeJay Brun said. “She is a true catalyst on our team.  Her intensity on the field and in the dugout has helped catapult us to our 9-2 record this past week.”

In garnering her third award of the season, Calhoun, a native of Hamilton, Ohio, put in another dominant performance in the circle for No. 1 Valdosta State, tossing 19 innings of scoreless ball with 34 strikeouts and just one walk. Surrendering just four hits, the righty held her opponents to a .066 batting average and started her new scoreless streak after having her 46.2-inning streak snapped last Sunday.

“This is great for Caitlyn,” head coach Thomas Macera said. “She worked really hard during the offseason and last year, and she has definitely stepped up her game. She’s earned every honor she’s received this year, and her success is a great example of how hard work pays off.”

In the Blazers’ Gulf South series opener against Union, Calhoun tossed her fourth no-hitter of the season as she faced just one batter over the minimum, striking out 14 and walking one in a 3-0 victory. She followed that up with a two-hit shutout with 10 punchouts and zero walks in a 2-0 win, which at the time extended their winning streak to 23 games. Earlier in the week, she tossed a five-inning two-hit shutout (10 K) on the road at Lander.

“Caitlyn is quiet and humble,” Macera on Calhoun’s unselfish, team-oriented mentality. “She understands the stage that she’s on and is very appreciative of what she’s getting this year.”
