St. Cloud State University took over as the new No. 1 team in the NCAA Division II wrestling rankings, according to the poll released Wednesday by the Division II Wrestling Coaches Association.
The Huskies own a 14-2 overall record this season and a perfect 5-0 record in the always rugged NSIC. SCSU will continue its 2014-15 eason on Feb. 13 with a match at Southwest Minnesota State at 7 p.m. and a match on Feb. 15 at Upper Iowa (2 p.m.).
The Huskies received three first-place votes and finished with 154 points to edge previous No. 1 Maryville (Mo.) by two points in balloting of head coaches from around the country.
The Saints, who have been top-ranked in four of this season’s six polls, had four first-place votes and 152 points. Notre Dame (Ohio) earned the remaining first-place nod and is third with 143 points, four ahead of Ouachita Baptist (Ark.). Rounding out the top 10 is Mercyhurst (Pa.), Colorado Mesa, Western State (Colo.), McKendree (Ill.), Nebraska-Kearney and Upper Iowa.
SCSU redshirt junior Clint Poster gained a number ranking at 157-pounds in the individual polls, while junior Gabe Fogarty has moved up to second place in the rankings at 165-pounds. At 285-pounds, SCSU’s Austin Goergen is ranked third in the nation and Josh Howk is ranked fourth in the nation at 141-pounds. SCSU’s Mike Rhone is now ranked fifth at 133-pounds.
Maryville will host the 2015 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships, set for March 13-14 in St. Louis, Mo.
