BROOKINGS, S.D. – South Dakota State (8-6, 1-0 WWC) closed out its month-long homestand with a split against a pair of Pac-12 opponents. SDSU opened the day with a 23-10 victory over Cal Poly before falling to #17 Oregon State, 35-6.
“We put our guys in a position to get tested today and they responded early, but we need to bring more fight,” head coach Chris Bono said. “Everything continues to lead to March, so we have to keep believing in the process.”
Sophomore Isaac Andrade got the Jacks on the board with an 11-6 decision before junior Brance Simms came out in dominating fashion and worked his way to a tech fall, 19-4.
Following a Cal Poly win at 141, returning NCAA qualifier Alex Kocer started a string of three straight Jackrabbits decisions. #7 Cody Pack and John Nething II also picked up wins as SDSU built a 17-7 advantage.
Cal Poly went on to win consecutive matches before #20 Nate Rotert grinded his way to a 12-10 decision over J.T. Goodwin. Rotert trailed 8-5 after the first period, but got three back points to get back in it early in the second. Goodwin entered the third with a 9-8 advantage, but Rotert outscored him 4-1 in the final period for the win.
In the 285-lb finale, J.J. Everard and Nicolas Jordan were locked 1-1 in overtime before Johnson got hit with a second stalling, which gave Everard the 2-1 win.
In the second dual, #17 OSU gained early momentum and never looked back, as the Beavers recorded falls in the first two matches and added a pair of decisions to jump out to an 18-0 lead.
#7 Cody Pack got SDSU on the board with a 3-1 decision over #21 Alex Elder, but it didn’t come easy. Pack and Elder were tied 1-1 late in the third and Elder held a 1:00 riding advantage. Pack unleashed multiple shots in the third and finally capitalized, as he got the decisive takedown with six seconds remaining.
SDSU would be held scoreless until the 285-lb finale, where J.J. Everard beat Nate Keeve, 5-2. Following a scoreless first period, Everard escaped and got a takedown to take a 3-1 lead into the third. Everard added another takedown in the closing seconds for the 5-2 win.
SDSU hits the road this weekend for a pair of WWC duals at Wyoming January 30 and Air Force February 1.
