WON NEWSLETTER: June 29, 2020 Observer Newsletter: #SpeakingOut continues, WWE COVID-19 outbreak
The worst week in the pro wrestling industry since 2007 is looked back on in the new issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
We go through name after name, case after case, the culture, the situations, suggestions on changes and a history dating back to the 30s of women in wrestling’s plight. We look at Joey Ryan, the WWE talent, people fired from every company, companies restructuring, attorney letters, Jim Cornette, Sammy Guevara, Travis Banks, Marty Scurll, the U.K. culture, the legal aspect, the ugliness from the fan base, David Lagana, Michael Elgin, death of CHIKARA, and pretty much the only mainstream place that will touch the story.
We also look at the COVID outbreak in WWE. We look at how it happened, why AEW is at risk, the new taping schedule, the plans to return to shows with fans quicker than you think, how the AEW decision making went, how WWE is getting around the travel ban, the Orlando, the mask ordinance, and much more.
The new issue also covers:
The ending of WWE Backstage, the Tuesday night block and more.
Update on the New Japan Cup tournament with this coming week’s shows.
What was supposed to be a big deal and ended up going nowhere due to COVID, the Tessa Blanchard Impact title win. We talk about the ending, and why it happened the way it did.
Possible end of Undertaker’s career, where wrestling stood this past week in sports ratings, WWE gets new overseas deal, most-watched shows on WWE Network and WWE’s current worth.

SATURDAY NEWS UPDATE
WWE
It was noted on last night’s SmackDown that the segment with Sheamus presenting “a toast to Jeff Hardy” that had been announced for the show will instead take place on next Friday’s episode. Sheamus didn’t appear on last night’s SmackDown. Jeff Hardy defeated Baron Corbin in the main event of the show, with that match being set up after Hardy attacked Corbin for insulting The Undertaker.
The Intercontinental title match between AJ Styles and Drew Gulak that had been set for last night’s SmackDown didn’t take place. Gulak appeared on the show and was also a guest commentator for 205 Live.
Legado del Fantasma (NXT Cruiserweight Champion Santos Escobar, Raul Mendoza & Joaquin Wilde) are set to appear on next Friday’s 205 Live. It will be Escobar’s 205 Live debut. Isaiah “Swerve” Scott, who defeated Escobar in their interim Cruiserweight title tournament match, defeated Tony Nese on 205 Live last night and said he wants a shot at Escobar’s title.
Big E wrote Aiyana Mo’Nay Stanley-Jones and Tamir Rice’s names on his armbands for last night’s SmackDown.
Spectrum Sports 360’s Jon Alba tweeted that he’s heard from multiple sources about WWE pulling a contract offer from a potential signee who was involved in the recent string of sexual allegations: “I’ve heard from multiple sources about #WWE pulling a contract offer from a top young talent involved in the recent string of sexual allegations that have come out about pro wrestlers. Obviously a situation the company (and everyone) has to take very seriously. Since I’m seeing some misunderstanding this: This is NOT someone currently under contract. Someone who was supposed to be signed and brought into NXT.”
WWE’s YouTube channel uploaded Charlotte Flair vs. Sasha Banks from the November 28, 2016 episode of Raw and The Rock, Undertaker & Kane vs. Triple H, Vince McMahon & Shane McMahon from King of the Ring 2000.
Other Wrestling
Pro Wrestling Sheet reported that Impact Wrestling has been heavily pursuing Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson in order for them to appear at Slammiversary, which is taking place on Saturday, July 18. The report stated that sources say Impact “has offered Gallows and Anderson incredibly strong deals that would allow them to work with New Japan once that’s a possibility, both in a legal sense and from a travel sense due to current COVID-19 restrictions.”
Cody announced that AEW’s “Road To” YouTube series will return on Monday to build up Wednesday’s Fyter Fest night one.
Robert Anthony teased answering one of Cody’s future TNT Championship open challenges.
MMA
Jon Jones said he’s willing to sit out two or three years to create change for fighter pay in the UFC: “I’m not asking for anything outrageous, and I know we’re in a pandemic, and I know when you’re a multimillionaire and you’re asking for more, it makes you seem like this greedy person. I’m very aware of all of this, but I’m also very aware that I have the voice and the platform to make change. Most of the guys who are doing the absolute worst are not in the position that they can say publicly, ‘I have a second job, I’m borrowing money from my parents.’ I know so many fighters who are living in the Jackson Wink MMA gym because they can’t afford to have their own apartment, and they’re UFC fighters. So this is sad. And if I have to have a bad relationship with Dana, sit out for two years, three years, to bring light to what’s happening, then these are the things people remember you for more than winning belts. I stood for the younger fighters.”
The UFC announced Dustin Poirier as the winner of the inaugural Forrest Griffin Community Award.
Poirier thinks Justin Gaethje could give Khabib Nurmagomedov problems in their fight: “I do think that if Gaethje can keep the fight in the middle of the octagon, he can give Khabib some trouble. I think it’s going to be hard to get him down in the open space. Definitely hard to hold him down in the open space. But will Justin be able to keep his back off the fence and land those shots and make Khabib work for takedowns in the open? That’s the big question.”
ONE Championship is returning with an event in Bangkok, Thailand on July 31.
