Following the first look photos of Will Smith in Disney’s Aladdin remake that were released early Wednesday from EW, fans were confused as to why the character of Genie was not blue.

Smith took to social media to explain, stating that Genie would in fact be blue in the film. His instagram post reads:

“BAM!! First look at the Genie, Princess Jasmine, and #Aladdin! Check Me Rockin’ the Top Knot Ponytail Vibes in @entertainmentweekly  (and yes, I’m gonna be BLUE! 🙂 )”

Smith also elaborated by explaining that the photos of himself released as Genie is the character in his “human/disguise” form, most likely while he’s walking around Agrabah or in public areas, but that overall, Genie “will be CGI most of the movie.”

In the cover story for EW, they mention that photos were not included of Genie in his true CGI form due to the effects not being completed yet.

While we wait for photos of the blue Genie to be released, make sure to check out the trailer for Disney’s live-action Aladdin, find out who the composer duo is for the remake, and let us know in the comments your thoughts so far on the human-Genie that is Will Smith!

Disney’s live-action Aladdin is set to hit theaters on May 24, 2019 in the US and UK.
