Chris Jericho will face Hiroshi Tanahashi at night two of Wrestle Kingdom 14 this evening, and as previously reported the “Ace” of New Japan Pro-Wrestling will receive a future shot at the AEW World Championship if he’s able to defeat the champion at the Tokyo Dome.

According to Dave Meltzerr, who is in Japan for this weekend’s festivities, the idea was initially a collaboration between Jericho, Tanahashi and New Japan booker Gedo to add an extra level of hype to their Wrestle Kingdom match.

AEW President Tony Khan himself reportedly worked with Rocky Romero on the details of how the world title would be used in the storyline, but don’t expect that this will open the flood gates for a full-on partnership between the promotions.

Khan did approve the AEW title being used on New Japan programming, but the match is not planned to be referenced on AEW Dynamite or worked into any of their storylines. Right now Jericho is working on a program with Jon Moxley, leading to a match at their next pay-per-view.
