Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 was October 2018’s best-selling game in North America, beating out Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption 2 in this highly-competitive month.

Not only did Black Ops 4 become the best-selling game of the month, it almost instantly became the best-selling game of the year, and its launch month dollar sales are the eighth highest on record since NPD began tracking game sales in 1995. Black Ops 4 was the best-selling game of October on both PlayStation 4  and Xbox One.

Though exact numbers weren’t provided in NPD’s official report, we do know Black Ops 4 had a two week head start, and Red Dead Redemption 2 only had nine days that it was on sale in NPD’s October window ending on November 3. These launch month sales were more than triple what the original Red Dead Redemption sold in its launch month, and it’s already the second best-selling game of the year.

Within its first weekend following its launch on October 12, Black Ops 4 surpassed $500 million in sales worldwide. In comparison, Red Dead Redemption 2’s opening weekend following its launch on October 26 brought in over $725 million. As of November 7, Red Dead Redemption 2 had shipped over 17 million copies.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, hot off of its success from September, remained number three in October, with NBA 2K19 taking fourth, the Switch exclusive Super Mario Party ranking fifth, Soul Calibur 6 earning sixth and FIFA 19 sliding into seventh. Marvel’s Spider-Man, Madden NFL 19 and WWE 2K19 rounded out the top ten.

Here are the top ten best-selling games for October 2018:

  1. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4
  2. Red Dead Redemption 2
  3. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
  4. NBA 2K19
  5. Super Mario Party
  6. Soul Calibur 6

Across October, dollar sales in the industry surpassed $1.55 billion USD: the highest total spending amount in the month of October since the NPD Group began tracking sales in 1995.

The PlayStation 4 was October’s best-selling hardware platform, with unit sales reaching an all-time October high for the platform, and the highest October sales for any PlayStation platform since the PlayStation 2’s success in 2002.

Marvel’s Spider-Man topped the charts in September, becoming the fastest-selling PlayStation exclusive of all time. As it stands, it’s the fourth best-selling game of 2018.
