Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger has revealed that Disney’s upcoming streaming service will be called Disney+.

Announced during a live audio webcast of Disney’s fiscal full year and fourth quarter 2018 financial results, Iger confirmed the name of Disney+ and that it is still scheduled to launch in late 2019.

Alongside the name announcement, Iger confirmed that a second Star Wars live-action series was in development at Lucasfilm for Disney+ and that it will be a prequel to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Untitled Live-Action Star Wars Series

Perhaps the single biggest draw for Disney's new service is the very first live-action Star Wars TV series. Director Jon Favreau is overseeing this ambitious project, which is said to have a budget of $100 million for its initial 10-episode run. Little is known about the plot or characters involved, though the series is reportedly set several years after the events of Return of the Jedi and the fall of the Empire. Rumors suggest that the series may center around the planet Mandalore as its citizens rebuild in the aftermath of Imperial occupation. This would make sense, as Favreau himself voiced the Mandalorian leader Pre Vizsla in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.”,”height”:1080,”width”:1920,”url”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/08/13/favreau-star-wars-1534177044999.jpg”,”styleUrl”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/08/13/favreau-star-wars-1534177044999_{size}.jpg”,”credit”:””,”objectRelationName”:””,”objectRelationUrl”:””,”albumName”:”Everything Coming to Disney's Streaming Service (So Far)”,”relativePosition”:”02″,”albumTotalCount”:29},{“caption”:”Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season 7

Star Wars fans were ecstatic to learn at Comic-Con that The Clone Wars is making a comeback. A 12-episode seventh season will be debuting on the service, helping to wrap up the various unfinished storylines left hanging when the series abruptly concluded on Cartoon Network in 2013. “,”height”:720,”width”:1280,”url”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/08/13/clone-wars-1534177044992.jpg”,”styleUrl”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/08/13/clone-wars-1534177044992_{size}.jpg”,”credit”:””,”objectRelationName”:””,”objectRelationUrl”:””,”albumName”:”Everything Coming to Disney's Streaming Service (So Far)”,”relativePosition”:”03″,”albumTotalCount”:29},{“caption”:”Star Wars Movies

Naturally, existing Star Wars movies will be included on the streaming service, though not nearly as many as fans might be expecting. Because of various existing licensing deals with the likes of Netflix and Starz, no Star Wars movies made before 2019 are currently able to be included. In particular, Turner has the broadcasting rights to the original six films locked up until 2024. However, Disney is reportedly trying to buy back those rights, so it's possible the classic films will wind up being available when the streaming service goes live.”,”height”:834,”width”:1482,”url”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/08/13/star-wars-1534177045034.jpeg”,”styleUrl”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/08/13/star-wars-1534177045034_{size}.jpeg”,”credit”:””,”objectRelationName”:””,”objectRelationUrl”:””,”albumName”:”Everything Coming to Disney's Streaming Service (So Far)”,”relativePosition”:”04″,”albumTotalCount”:29},{“caption”:”Untitled Marvel TV Series

While the heroes of the Marvel Universe can currently be seen on everything from ABC (Agents of SHIELD) to Fox (The Gifted) to Hulu (Runaways) to Freeform (Cloak & Dagger), Disney clearly feels there's still room for more Marvel-themed TV. A new live-action series is being planned for the streaming service, though it's unknown what characters it might focus on. Speculation involves everything from an Agent Carter revival to the Marvel's Most Wanted series that never got off the ground at ABC. “,”height”:720,”width”:1280,”url”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/08/13/marvel-tv-1534177045015.jpg”,”styleUrl”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/08/13/marvel-tv-1534177045015_{size}.jpg”,”credit”:””,”objectRelationName”:””,”objectRelationUrl”:””,”albumName”:”Everything Coming to Disney's Streaming Service (So Far)”,”relativePosition”:”05″,”albumTotalCount”:29},{“caption”:”MCU Movies

Disney's streaming service will obviously include as much existing MCU content as possible, though as with the Star Wars movies the actual selection will be limited by the various existing licensing deals in place. With Marvel's current arrangement with Netflix winding down, 2019's Captain Marvel will be the first new MCU movie to bypass Netflix and head to Disney's service instead. However, there is one corner of the MCU fans shouldn't expect to see make the jump to Disney's service. Netflix shows like Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage will remain where they are for the foreseeable future. It's possible they could migrate to Disney's streaming service one day when Netflix stops making new shows with the Marvel characters, but given Disney's refusal to include R-rated content, they may be just as happy to let these darker, more adult-oriented shows stay at Netflix.”,”height”:720,”width”:1280,”url”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/08/13/mcu-1534177045016.jpg”,”styleUrl”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/08/13/mcu-1534177045016_{size}.jpg”,”credit”:””,”objectRelationName”:””,”objectRelationUrl”:””,”albumName”:”Everything Coming to Disney's Streaming Service (So Far)”,”relativePosition”:”06″,”albumTotalCount”:29},{“caption”:”Don Quixote

Disney is looking to compete with Netflix and Amazon by launching its own streaming service in 2019, and the studio certainly has plenty of beloved franchises – past and present – that it can revisit to build out its roster of shows and movies. Thankfully, Netflix debuted Season 6: The Lost Episodes in 2014, but these were only a fraction of the upcoming episodes that were in development at the time. Some of the unfinished episode arcs included Ahsoka's adventures after she left the Jedi Order and even a Yoda story set on the Wookiee homeworld of Kashyyyk. Clearly, Dave Filoni and Pablo Hidalgo have more stories to tell in the Clone Wars universe, so it's no wonder the series was revived for a final season for Disney's streaming service, which was announced at Comic-Con. Atwell and the rest of the creative team have all expressed interest in continuing Peggy's adventures, and given the Marvel movies' willingness to explore other periods (like the '90s-set Captain Marvel), it probably wouldn't be too difficult to get the band back together for shortened seasons exploring different missions in Peggy's storied career, following a similar model to Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock series.”,”height”:720,”width”:1280,”url”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/07/13/disneystreaming-agentcarter-1531440143561.jpg”,”styleUrl”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/07/13/disneystreaming-agentcarter-1531440143561_{size}.jpg”,”credit”:””,”objectRelationName”:””,”objectRelationUrl”:””,”albumName”:”19 Shows We Want to See on Disney’s Streaming Service “,”relativePosition”:”08″,”albumTotalCount”:21},{“caption”:”20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Series

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is a classic exploratory tale, based on a novel by Jules Verne, that tells the story of men venturing into the great unknown, led by scientific genius Captain Nemo. In 1954, Walt Disney released the live-action adaption with an all-star cast featuring Kirk Douglas and James Mason. Over fifty years after its release, there have been talks of a remake, with directors David Fincher (Gone Girl) and James Mangold (Logan) signed on to helm the film at various times. Since the remake's production is struggling to get off the ground, Disney's streaming service would be wise to explore Nemo's adventures further in a live-action series. With shows like Game of Thrones and The Expanse showing off how good modern TV visual effects can be, an underwater adventure series like 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea shouldn't be a problem. “,”height”:720,”width”:1280,”url”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/07/13/disneystreaming-20thousand-1531440143557.jpg”,”styleUrl”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/07/13/disneystreaming-20thousand-1531440143557_{size}.jpg”,”credit”:””,”objectRelationName”:””,”objectRelationUrl”:””,”albumName”:”19 Shows We Want to See on Disney’s Streaming Service “,”relativePosition”:”09″,”albumTotalCount”:21},{“caption”:”Tron Live-Action Series

In a recent interview with Garrett Hedlund, the Tron: Legacy star offered a few reasons why Tron 3 was never made, ranging from issues with Tomorrowland's poor box office performance to scheduling conflicts. While this doesn't mean the Tron movie franchise is gone for good, it may be some time before we see another cinematic outing, so why not make a live-action series? Disney XD has already explored the Tron universe further with their animated series, Tron: Uprising, which took place between the first two films. There is still plenty more story to tell outside the Flynn family saga, so hopefully, Legacy wasn't the final story in the Tron live-action universe. “,”height”:720,”width”:1280,”url”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/07/13/disneystreaming-tron-1531440143582.jpg”,”styleUrl”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/07/13/disneystreaming-tron-1531440143582_{size}.jpg”,”credit”:””,”objectRelationName”:””,”objectRelationUrl”:””,”albumName”:”19 Shows We Want to See on Disney’s Streaming Service “,”relativePosition”:10,”albumTotalCount”:21},{“caption”:”Marvel Live-Action Series

Conveniently, Marvel already has a pilot for a live-action series in the can: New Warriors, described as a live-action "docu-comedy" featuring a young cast of oddball wannabe heroes, was given a 10-episode series order by Freeform, before the Disney-owned cable network decided they didn't have room to air it in 2018 and gave it back to Marvel to shop elsewhere. Disney execs are rumored to have loved the pilot, so it would make sense for the project to find a home on Disney's streaming service, where it could presumably function as part of a larger, in-house Marvel TV Universe, similar to what Netflix has built across its Defenders shows, with potential crossovers galore. (There's little chance of said Defenders shows making their way over to Disney's service, though – Netflix has the rights to those shows for as long as they want to keep renewing them.)”,”height”:720,”width”:1280,”url”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/07/13/disneystreaming-marvelliveaction-1531440143580.jpg”,”styleUrl”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/07/13/disneystreaming-marvelliveaction-1531440143580_{size}.jpg”,”credit”:””,”objectRelationName”:””,”objectRelationUrl”:””,”albumName”:”19 Shows We Want to See on Disney’s Streaming Service “,”relativePosition”:11,”albumTotalCount”:21},{“caption”:”Behind the Scenes Features

As digital streaming services like Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu become more widely used, fewer consumers are buying physical media. At one time, DVD and Blu-ray discs were sources of endless amounts of special features and production documentaries, but now, many of the titles coming out have little more than 15-20 minutes worth of extras. With a digital platform of their own, Disney could entice physical media junkies to move over to digital if they want to consume all of that Avengers: Infinity War behind-the-scenes goodness. “,”height”:720,”width”:1280,”url”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/07/13/disneystreaming-extras-1531440143568.jpg”,”styleUrl”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/07/13/disneystreaming-extras-1531440143568_{size}.jpg”,”credit”:””,”objectRelationName”:””,”objectRelationUrl”:””,”albumName”:”19 Shows We Want to See on Disney’s Streaming Service “,”relativePosition”:12,”albumTotalCount”:21},{“caption”:”John Carter Series

Disney's 2012 adaptation of John Carter of Mars may not have gone according to plan from a financial standpoint, but the movie did prove that the dry wastelands of Mars can be a vibrant sci-fi playground to explore. In total, author Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote 11 entries in the John Carter universe, so there is plenty of untapped material for Disney to use for a show. In 2014, Disney let the Barsoom novel rights go back to the Burroughs estate, but Disney shouldn't have any trouble getting them back. “,”height”:720,”width”:1280,”url”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/07/13/disneystreaming-johncarter-1531440143577.jpg”,”styleUrl”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/07/13/disneystreaming-johncarter-1531440143577_{size}.jpg”,”credit”:””,”objectRelationName”:””,”objectRelationUrl”:””,”albumName”:”19 Shows We Want to See on Disney’s Streaming Service “,”relativePosition”:13,”albumTotalCount”:21},{“caption”:”More Boy/Girl Meets World

Disney Channel shocked fans and critics when it axed popular Boy Meets World sequel series Girl Meets World last year, and viewers are still campaigning for it to be revived. Considering it was a critical and ratings success, Girl Meets World's cancellation is still a head-scratcher: some wondered if it was outgrowing Disney Channel's youthful target audience, but since the streaming service is presumably aiming for a broader demographic of viewers, it might be a good home for the series (which would bring a built-in and grateful fanbase along with it).”,”height”:720,”width”:1280,”url”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/07/13/disneystreaming-boymeets-1531440143562.jpg”,”styleUrl”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/07/13/disneystreaming-boymeets-1531440143562_{size}.jpg”,”credit”:””,”objectRelationName”:””,”objectRelationUrl”:””,”albumName”:”19 Shows We Want to See on Disney’s Streaming Service “,”relativePosition”:14,”albumTotalCount”:21},{“caption”:”Halloweentown Series

We'd love to see a library of all of Disney Channel's Original Movies on the streaming service, but Halloweentown could also be a good candidate for the series treatment. Now that Netflix is rebooting Sabrina the Teenage Witch with a spookier, more horror-oriented tone, Disney could launch their own supernatural teen franchise following 13-year-old Marnie Piper, whose grandmother is a witch who lives in a magical alternate dimension called Halloweentown, populated by fantastical creatures like ghosts, vampires and werewolves. “,”height”:720,”width”:1280,”url”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/07/13/disneystreaming-halloweentown-1531440143572.jpg”,”styleUrl”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/07/13/disneystreaming-halloweentown-1531440143572_{size}.jpg”,”credit”:””,”objectRelationName”:””,”objectRelationUrl”:””,”albumName”:”19 Shows We Want to See on Disney’s Streaming Service “,”relativePosition”:15,”albumTotalCount”:21},{“caption”:”A New Jim Henson Company Show

For the three years it was on the air, Disney's Gargoyles was a fascinating show, featuring a darker tone that was more akin to Batman: The Animated series than any other cartoon Disney had going at the time. Recently, Get Out director Jordan Peele has expressed an interest in directing a feature film, but since the project has not been greenlit yet, Disney could reboot the series on their streaming service. Whether live-action or animated, having the Gargoyles back in action is good for everyone. “,”height”:720,”width”:1280,”url”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/07/13/disneystreaming-gargoyles-1531440143571.jpg”,”styleUrl”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/07/13/disneystreaming-gargoyles-1531440143571_{size}.jpg”,”credit”:””,”objectRelationName”:””,”objectRelationUrl”:””,”albumName”:”19 Shows We Want to See on Disney’s Streaming Service “,”relativePosition”:17,”albumTotalCount”:21},{“caption”:”Adult Rocketeer Series

There have also been rumors of a long-gestating movie reboot/sequel featuring a female lead, so the streaming service would be a smart place for Disney to debut that project (and seed a potential TV spinoff), given that the original film wasn't exactly a box office smash.”,”height”:720,”width”:1280,”url”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/07/13/disneystreaming-rocketeer-1531440143580.jpg”,”styleUrl”:”https://assets1.ignimgs.com/2018/07/13/disneystreaming-rocketeer-1531440143580_{size}.jpg”,”credit”:””,”objectRelationName”:””,”objectRelationUrl”:””,”albumName”:”19 Shows We Want to See on Disney’s Streaming Service “,”relativePosition”:18,”albumTotalCount”:21},{“caption”:”Flight of the Navigator Series

Flight of the Navigator may have started out as a movie back in 1986, but an updated version of the story featuring a human boy named David and his adventures with an alien spacecraft would make an excellent TV addition to Disney's streaming service. David and the flying saucer's pilot form a compelling bond over the course of the film's 90-minute runtime, which would make for an interesting character study stretched out over multiple episodes. Disney+ will also be the home to Jon Favreau’s live-action Star Wars series The Mandalorian, will contain new stories from such worlds as Monsters Inc. and High School Musical, and will see the return of Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Disney streaming service was announced in 2017 and was rumored to be called Disney Play.

When it launches in 2019, it will be the exclusive home of Star Wars movies from 2019 and beyond and every Marvel Movie after 2019’s Captain Marvel.

As for the previous films, Disney wants to buy back the TV rights to Star Wars films from AT&T’s Turner Broadcasting as Turner has rights to them until 2024.
