ST. PAUL — Four hours prior, it was magic for Frazee’s wrestling team. The No. 3-seeded Hornets had knocked off defending Minnesota Class 1A state champion Minneota, which had beaten them earlier in the season, in the state semifinals. It required every wrestler on Frazee to stave off big points, grab extra points and it wasn’t clinched until a pin in the final match at heavyweight by Tanner Tappe.

Joy turns to despair quickly at the Minnesota state wrestling tournament. There was just a bit of magic missing at the Xcel Energy Center in the state championship, as top-seeded Kenyon-Wanamingo squeaked out a 26-24 win over the Hornets. This was after beating the Hornets 42-15 earlier in the season.

“Kids wrestled well,” Frazee coach Clay Nagel said. “A two-point difference is nothing to feel bad about. Both teams competed hard. We don’t feel bad at all. Sure, the guys would have liked to take first, but we weren’t supposed to be in the finals to begin with. We overachieved as far as I’m concerned.” Continue reading at www.inforum.com
