OLD BETHPAGE, NY — The 2019 PGA Championship was underway Thursday at the iconic Bethpage Black Course in sunny Old Bethpage, and while all eyes were on Tiger Woods, it was his group-mate Brooks Koepka who got off to a roaring start. Rory McIlroy on Tuesday leapfrogged Woods and Dustin Johnson as the favorite to win the event, the second of golf’s four major championships. The event runs through Sunday.

TNT was to air the tournament Friday and Saturday. TNT and CBS will then split coverage on Saturday and Sunday. Cord-cutters can watch free live coverage, including featured group coverage, on the PGA Championship app and at PGAChampionship.com.

Odds

While McIlroy, the 4th ranked golfer in the world, is the favorite to win the tournament, oddsmakers are bullish on Johnson, Woods and Koepka, each of whom are also all ranked in the top six in the world. Koepka won the PGA Championship last year shooting a -16, but Woods is coming off a sensational win at The Masters last month.

Pete Watt, a spokesman for Oddschecker.com, told Patch that Koepka is the only frontrunner being backed en masse by gamblers, accounting for nearly 10 percent of all bets placed over the last week. Woods, Johnson and McIlroy each received just 3 percent.

Despite winning the U.S. Open and finishing second at both The Masters and The Open, the PGA Championship hasn’t been as “happy a stage” for Johnson in recent years, Watt noted.

“His best finish here was fifth, way back in 2010, which may go some way to explain why he isn’t much fancied by the bettors – but write him off at your peril,” he said.

Watt added that it’s unsurprising to see Woods, a fan favorite, among the favorites following last month’s stellar performance at Augusta.

“Only time will tell if his chances of securing back-to-back Majors have been overegged,” he said.

Fellow golf heavyweight Justin Thomas, meanwhile, withdrew from the tournament with a wrist injury.
