Round Rock Cedar Ridge High School captured the 2019 NFCA Texas Leadoff Classic title with a 10-5 victory over Southwest High School (San Antonio) on Feb. 16 in Bryan, Texas. The NFCA partnered with Bryan High School head coach Enrique Luna for the 23rd edition of the wildly-popular Bryan-College Station Tournament, which was renamed for 2019.
Under the watch of head coach Jessica Poole, the Raiders’ undefeated run (6-0) through the main bracket included wins over Flower Mound, Johnson, Alvin, Splendora and The Woodlands. Southwest, guided by 2017 NFCA Diversity Grant winner Sandra Hernandez, finished with a 5-1 mark, defeating Temple, Vandegrift, San Marcos, Klein and Ridge Point.

“The 2019 NFCA Texas Leadoff Classic was a huge success,” said Luna. “The weather was cooperative and all 270 games were played by the 90 teams. We can’t wait to make 2020 even better as we help celebrate the return of USA Softball in the Olympics.”
Semifinalists Ridge Point and The Woodlands battled for third place with the Highlanders coming out on top, 7-3. After dropping its first game, Holmes marched through the consolation bracket with triumphs over Lake Travis, Leander, Willis, Belton and Byron Nelson.
In all, 90 teams competed over a three-day stretch, Feb. 14-16 in Bryan and College Station, Texas. Contests were played at Bryan High School, Rudder High School, A&M Consolidated High School, Veterans Park, and Bryan Recreation Athletic Complex. The main bracket featured 64 programs, while a round-robin segment highlighted 26 more teams.
In round-robin play, Eaton (6-0), Eastview (6-0), and Huffman (5-0-1) enjoyed undefeated weekends, while Lake Creek and Lewisville posted 5-1 marks.
The 2020 edition of the NFCA Texas Leadoff Classic returns to the same site, Feb. 20-22.
