KINGSTON, NY — A Kingston barber who has been giving haircuts over the last few weeks has tested positive for the new coronavirus. Ulster County Health Commissioner Dr. Carol Smith announced Wednesday that anyone who received a haircut at the barbershop on Broadway in the last three weeks is urged to immediately contact their primary care physician and seek testing.

Neither the name of the barber nor the name of the shop was released by health officials.

Alternatively, they could contact the Ulster County COVID-19 hotline at 845-443-8888.

New York PAUSE directives, signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, prohibited barbershops, beauty salons, nail salons and other personal hygiene services from being open and operating for fear of spreading the potentially deadly virus.

“We are taking extraordinary measures to try and minimize the spread of this dangerous disease and learning that a barbershop has been operating illicitly for weeks with a COVID-19 positive employee is extraordinarily disheartening,” Smith said. “As much as we would all like to go out and get a professional haircut, this kind of direct contact has the potential to dramatically spread this virus throughout our community and beyond.

“I urge anyone who has received a haircut at a Kingston barber in the last several weeks to immediately contact their physician or call our hotline to arrange for a diagnostic test.”

According to county information Thursday, there have been 1,542 confirmed positive cases of the new coronavirus in Ulster County. There are currently 731 active cases and there have been 64 deaths.
