Vanessa Hudgens is opening up about the loss of her father, Greg Hudgens, one year after he passed away from stage four cancer at the age of 65.

“Today marks one year since my dad passed away,” the star captioned an angel-filtered selfie on Instagram Monday. “He’s my angel looking down on me and I know how proud he is. I keep trucking on but still feel his presence in my heart. And there he will forever stay.”

Greg’s death came just a day before Vanessa was scheduled to star in the live musical production of Grease: Live, and somehow she still managed to put on an incredible performance.

“I am so sad to say that last night my daddy, Greg passed away from stage 4 cancer,” she wrote at the time on Twitter. Thank you to everyone who kept him in your prayers. Tonight, I do the show in his honor.” Hudgens had been asking fans to pray for her dad as he battled the disease.

As the credits rolled, the production paid tribute to Greg with a special message appearing on the screen before it faded to black. “In loving memory of Greg Hudgens. June 22, 1950 – January 30, 2016,” the tribute read.

A few months after her father passed, Vanessa got candid about how she was dealing with his loss, telling People, “There are highs and there are lows.”

She continued, “It sucks, but death happens. It never makes it easier but it happens to all of us. It’s just something we have to get through until we all meet again in heaven.”
