After making nine Premier League starts last season, the midfielder has left the Hammers for a switch to Serie A

Fiorentina have signed Edimilson Fernandes on a season-long loan from West Ham.

The Switzerland midfielder, capped three times by his country, made nine Premier League starts last term having joined the Hammers from Sion in 2016.

Manuel Pellegrini has allowed Fernandes to leave London Stadium after adding Felipe Anderson, Jack Wilshere and Andriy Yarmolenko during the transfer window.

Serie A side Fiorentina confirmed in a statement Fernandes has joined them on loan, with the deal also including an option to buy the 22-year-old.

The Hammers kicked off their 2018-19 league campaign with a 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Liverpool on Sunday.

Goals from Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane (two) and Daniel Sturridge sealed the emphatic win for the Reds, who move to the top of the table after the first round of matches.

Reflecting on the game, Michail Antonio told West Ham’s official club website: “Liverpool away on the first day of the season is a good challenge – the result in the end is a difficult one, but I think we performed better than 4-0.

“Liverpool have one of the best records at home, so we kick on and our season starts next week against Bournemouth.

“We’ve signed nine players, and some of them have had pre-season with us but some of them came quite late, so we haven’t played much with them. We’ll get together and we’ll gel.

“I managed to get a start for the first game of the season and you need those players behind you who will threaten your position because it makes you want to play better and fight to stay in the team.

“I’m determined to keep my position. I’ve shown by playing in multiple positions that I just want to play and hopefully I can keep the shirt.”

Pellegrini’s side face Bournemouth at home in their next fixture, before a trip to Arsenal on August 25.
